Dianna-Week 3-Light

Prior to Sunrise

  1. What I did
    -Got up early
-Shot scenes with different subjects, different angles and focal lengths, and pointing in different directions on the lake all the way through the changing light periods that occurred from prior to sunrise through to when the sun finally rose well above the trees.

    What I like
-The expansiveness and the depth of this image
-The amount of differing tonal values in the few ‘colors’ that make up the image
-The way the tilt of the dog’s head (good girl!) and the narrowing band of fog invite the eye into the far side of the frame.
-The way the detail in the front of the frame invites the eye into the foreground.
-The repetition of detail and tonal value provided by the reflection on the water.

    What I would change
-I would prefer a more interesting placement of horizon (why does everything always land in the center of the frame?) and I would prefer the deck/dog to have been placed better in terms of the rule of thirds. Attempting to improve this, I tried a lot of different crops on this image but couldn’t get there without compromising the depth and expansiveness of the image which is kind of my favorite part of this image.
-I think it bugs me a little bit that the dog is so deeply silhouetted as compared to the line of trees and certainly as compared to the deck. It is hard to know without seeing it, but I think I might have preferred at least a hint of detail on her.
-In a perfect world the tracks on the deck would have led straight to the dog. They are a bit distracting to me but I probably prefer them over no tracks at all.
-I think a perfect world would also have had something in the foreground that was prettier than lake slime, but again I think I prefer it over nothing there at all.

  2. Wow, this photo is beautiful! It is such a calm, serene image. I love the colors and the expansiveness of the image. The angle of the dock and the fog-lined reflections are so visually appealing, and I especially love the dog (personally, I like the fact that it is as deeply silhouetted as it is).
